Advantages and Typical Applications of Yttrium Oxide Stabilized Zirconia YSZ

June 10,2019.
First, the advantages of yttria stabilized zirconia YSZ
Common zirconia stabilizers are usually alkaline earth oxides or rare earth oxides such as cerium oxide, cerium oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide. The stability of these stabilizers to stabilize zirconia is roughly similar, but the performance is different. In application, yttria doped zirconia has good comprehensive properties and is the most widely used solid electrolyte; stabilized zirconia doped with yttria has the best conductivity, but its mechanical properties are relatively poor; Stabilized zirconia has better performance than other stabilizers, and is relatively cheap, but easy to decalcify and destabilize; stabilized zirconia doped with magnesium oxide has general conductivity and low price, but its long-term use performance is poor, and it is generally used as a consumable.

Cerium oxide is used as a stabilizer, and this material is mainly a tetragonal structure. It has the highest flexural strength of all zirconia materials, especially during sintering. The yttrium-stabilized zirconia has a fine grain size and is suitable for use in a cutting tool because of its high wear resistance, which is used to cut a very sharp corner portion. The excellent crystal grains make the produced ceramics dense in density, without many pores, and have excellent mechanical strength, corrosion resistance, impact toughness, thermal shock resistance and extremely low thermal conductivity. Due to these characteristics, yttrium-stabilized zirconia is mainly used in wear parts, cutting tools and thermal barrier coatings.

Second, typical examples of yttrium-stabilized zirconia:
Solid oxide fuel cell SOFC
A solid oxide fuel cell is an all-solid chemical power plant that directly and efficiently converts chemical energy stored in fuel and oxidant into electrical energy at medium and high temperatures. The anode support in the SOFC system uses SAT NANO ZRO2-8Y, which is an excellent oxygen ion conductor and is stable under both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. It is an ideal material for use in solid oxide fuel cells.
2. Bioceramics, electronic ceramics, structural ceramics
ZRO2-3Y bio-dentured yttria stabilized zirconia has high fracture strength, high fracture toughness and high light transmission. Jade is very strong, highly white, and can be well matched to human teeth color. It is extremely suitable for milling with manual grinder or CAD/CAM equipment.
3. Artificial gemstones, colored ceramic ornaments
The hardness of zirconia color ceramic jewelry is close to that of natural diamond, lighter than metal, never worn, never discolored, never rust, beautiful and durable, bright and radiant, texture, visually extraordinary.
4. Refractory
Cerium oxide stabilized zirconia is used as a refractory material, and is applied to an electronic ceramic burning support pad, a refractory material for melting glass and metallurgical metal.
5. Oxygen sensor
The oxygen sensor is a standard configuration on the automobile. It uses ceramic sensitive components to measure the oxygen potential in the exhaust pipe of the automobile. The corresponding oxygen concentration is calculated by the chemical balance principle to monitor and control the combustion air-fuel ratio to ensure product quality and exhaust gas. A measuring component that discharges the standard. The zirconia element in the sensor acts like an electrolyte.
6. More applications
Wear parts, thermal barrier coatings, fiber optics, ferrules and bushings, grinding media
